Metabolic Testing

Body Mass Testing

Your body composition is an important part of evaluating your weight. At Higher Health, we use bioelectric impedance as a method to determine your body composition. This tool allows for accurate measuring of body fat. Bioelectric impedance measures body composition by sending a low, safe electrical current through the body. The current passes freely through the fluids contained in muscle tissue, but encounters difficulty/resistance when it passes through fat tissue. Finding out your body fat percentage is a good way to determine what your weight loss goals should be and to monitor your progress while trying to achieve a healthier lifestyle. This measurement is also useful for athletes who want to be in tip top physical shape.

Resting Metabolic Rate Testing

Your resting metabolic rate (RMR) is unique to you. Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is the number of calories your body burns at rest to carry out typical body functions like breathing and pumping blood. RMR makes up most of your metabolism — the total number of calories you burn in a day. The traditional way to measure RMR is to use a standardized formula that is not always accurate. The trained Registered Dietitian at Higher Health is able to use a hand held device in order to more accurately assess your RMR. This test doesn’t hurt and is done by breathing into a mouthpiece that will determine your body’s exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide while at rest. The device then calculates your individual RMR, which can then be used to make a meal plan that is tailored just for you. With this accurate RMR number, you will know exactly how much more you need to exercise and how much you need to eat to help you achieve your weight-loss and fitness goals. Please review the Metabolic Testing Prep for instructions on what you need to do before taking this test.
