Doula

Hometown: Fort McMurray, AB
Heather is RYT200 certified in Hatha Yoga, as well as RPYT certified in the `Yoga Birth Method`. She is a Doula and a member of CAPPA (Childbirth & Postpartum Professional Association) Canada and is the founder of “Yoga Doula” (yogadoula.ca). Heather’s prenatal yoga program at Higher Health is experiencing wonderful birth outcomes for new and experienced mothers. Her goal in working through Higher Health is to elevate the Doula profession within the region of Wood Buffalo.
Through her experience in yoga, she began to see the natural closeness that women feel, when preparing to conceive and give birth. One of four sisters, she relates well to women by gently understanding their pasts and the challenges they may feel are presented in fertility, pregnancy or childbirth. She enjoys broadening her doula work through her client relationships and supporting their birth experiences. She is also an active member in the community, supporting anywhere from 2-6 births per month, advocating for midwifery options for the families of Wood Buffalo, instructing yoga classes at Higher Health Yoga & Wellness, working on shift at Wood Buffalo Maternity & Baby weekly, as well as volunteering her time at breastfeeding support groups locally. She knows that our cities care providers are amazingly hard working people, and that building a strong working relationship with holistic and/or professional health practitioners, public health nurses and community doctors alike, will strongly support birthing families in Wood Buffalo. Heather is the head of Doula Services at Higher Health and is always seeking professional and supportive doulas to join the practice.
“I believe that every woman doesn’t only desire, but that they need physical and emotional support through fertility, pregnancy and birth. Having a Doula present in pregnancy and birth can help to ease any questions you may have, progress labour and give you that extra little bit of comfort while navigating your families way through such a wonderful life changing experience.”
Heather knows in her heart that giving birth is all about confidence and your ability to breathe deeply and calmly. When you deepen your breath, you deepen your confidence for birth. Her son was born naturally, without medical intervention, and she attributes this amazing event to meditation and the practice of Ujjayi breathing entirely.
